Corrinus is the pink-eyed Leader of the Lamya of Malinas. He was a lowly street urchin of East-Town, thieving and begging where he could. There has been rumours that the dreaded 'Old Woman' had a hand in raising him, hence he can be quite superstitious. He fought his way through the ranks, becoming a Huntsman for Lord Kint before plotting against the Lamya Leader and taking over his position. He desires to be loved - possibly a by-product of his childhood - and thirsts for power. His ultimate goal is to become the first Lamya King, not just of Malinas but of the whole of Aldenland.

Zev is Corrinus' mute personal bodyguard. He was found by the Lamya Leader terrorising people on the streets of East-Town. He is a mountain of a man, strong and skilled with a sword. He has a single-mindedness that means he will lock onto an idea and follow it through to the end, even if it means forgetting about his Leader!

Noan is loyal, proud and a brilliant fighter. He is also one of Corrinus' most cruel servants. He enjoys his job as Slavemaster, taking pride in serving Corrinus by beating the slaves into submission. He is stern and seldom smiles, unless he is about to inflict pain. He hates the Elani and feels it is beneath him to address them.

Millicent is the beautiful daughter of one of Corrinus' aides. Blonde-haired and grey-eyed, she is statuesque and graceful. She was promoted to become Aide and Watcher of Helena after Corrinus killed another of his aides. She is snide and deceitful and feels that Corrinus - as an ex street urchin - is beneath her. Her family descends from past Lamya Leaders and she herself, desires power.

Sorrel is the sixteen year old daughter of Cal the Warrior and Helena the Healer. Headstrong, passionate and full of adventure, she hates that she is to become an Elder. Sorrel would like nothing more than to train as a warrior like her brother Leif but she is thought to be too weak. She is fiercely loyal and often reckless in the defence of her friends. She is very slight, short for her age and has only a single star-shaped birthmark under her eye - something for which she was teased about as a child. Other Elani have three star marks.

Gaeshi is the mysterious boy who claims that he was born to serve Sorrel. He is calm, sincere and brave, willing to give his life for Sorrel. Gaeshi is neither Elani nor Lamya but a species known as 'Sarkany.' He has the ability to turn into a dragon but cannot control his actions in this form. A double-edged sword.

Leif is Sorrel's older brother by eight years. He has some of Sorrel's impatience but is a lot more level-headed. He is a fine warrior, happy to protect the Elani of the Vale. When he finds himself the last of his kind, he reluctantly takes charge and trains new warriors. Leif is resourceful, courageous and loving. 

Son of the farmer White Cloud and Rebecca, grandson of Old Synan the Elder. Little Cloud is Sorrel's classmate and best friend. Also training as an Elder and more inclined to the task, Cloud is happy with life in the Vale. He is bright and friendly and well loved by the Elani. He is not the bravest Elani but he will not leave Sorrel's side and is always there to comfort her. He hates his full name, preferring to be known only as 'Cloud'.
